In 2001, on South Hope Street in Los Angeles, CA, a group of entrepreneurs, business leaders and technology professionals was concerned about the future of the middle class and economic opportunity in the US. They sought to address the economic disparities threatening the fabric of our society. For two decades, we dedicated ourselves to renovating social systems, crafting blueprints for change, and pioneering innovative solutions.

Today at Hope Street Group, we believe that workforce mobility is the key to American prosperity and economic resilience. In our view, workforce mobility is created when there is:

  1. High quality career navigation and education, especially in high school [our current focus]

  2. Education-to-workforce alignment on training and credentials that connect to high-opportunity occupations

  3. Reduced barriers to high-opportunity occupations in the form of skills-based hiring practices

Career misalignment, defined as when a student doesn’t have plans to get the required education or experience to start their desired career, leads to higher unemployment later in life and lower wages throughout their career. Poorer students (bottom 25%) are 3x more likely to be career misaligned than their affluent peers (top 25%). We want to close this gap.

This isn’t a theoretical problem. Throughout our journey, we’ve met people dealing with the consequences of career misalignment. Jalyssa is a 20 year old single mom with an associate’s degree in digital marketing. When she graduated and started looking for work, she was surprised to find that almost all employers were looking for digital marketing professionals with a 4-year degree.

Jalyssa's story is just one of many. As we reflect on our past and the challenges of the future, we recognize the importance of stories like Jalyssa's. At Hope Street Group, we are dedicated to building bridges to brighter futures and creating a world where opportunities are accessible to all.

Join us on this journey as we work to rewrite the narrative of economic opportunity.
