Online Editor and Community Manager

Position Summary

Hope Street Group is seeking a creative, goal-oriented individual for an Online Editor and Community Manager position. The Online Editor and Community Manager works with Hope Street Group’s Executive Director and staff to conceive and produce www.hopestreetgroup.org, a member-oriented website that provides an outlet for public policy publishing, staff and member posts, event and volunteer promotions, the Economic Opportunity Index, and social networking. The goal of Hope Street Group is to make www.hopestreetgroup.org the "go-to" site for non-partisan publishing, events, and volunteer opportunities centered on Economic Opportunity policies. Additionally, the Online Editor and Community Manager will lead an effort to expand our use of social media and web 2.0 technologies.

Reporting to the Executive Director and working with our Communications Director, the Online Editor and Community Manager oversees site design and content development on a daily operational level, for both Hope Street Group’s public website and wiki, and evaluates readiness for publication. As a project manager, the Online Editor and Community Manager also facilitates Hope Street Group’s Web Advisory Board, comprised of staff and board members. The Online Editor and Community Manager will assist in the supervision of consultants and freelancers, as directed by the Executive Director, and the project supervision and team-building described.

This full-time position offers a competitive salary based on experience, including health insurance, paid holidays, and an optional 403(b) savings plan. We offer flexible hours and the ability to work remotely from home.

Responsibilities


Online Editing:

•    Oversees website content, including Hope Street Group’s homepage, and ensures that the website effectively links users to Hope Street Group’s on-line tools and resources;
•    Edits, copy edits, and posts materials for the website;
•    Plans and executes content positioning on the website, as well as visuals and design, including graphics, photos, and illustrations;
•    Provides report development and writing services, as needed;
•    Manages e-mail marketing of editorial products, including newsletters;
•    Offers proactive solutions to enhance the website and ensures state-of-the-art communication and fundraising strategies as possible within the available technology.
•    Continuous Search Engine Optimization to ensure the HSG site appears consistently high in key search term results.

Community Building

•    Designs, oversees and manages all aspects of Hope Street Group’s social networking and social media strategy;
•    Recruits and nurture relationships with members of the HSG community;
•    Works closely with Communications Director to draw traffic to the site and on viral outreach efforts; monitors web traffic and ensures traffic grows;
•    Helps coordinate outside writers, editors, graphic designers, and communications personnel, and serves as a contact to Web-related vendors and consultants when directed to do so;
•    Contributes to and champions the HSG website blog;
•    Develops metrics to grow and evaluate recruitment and online participation;
•    Participates with and stays connected to our users – knowing what they care about and encouraging them in their efforts;
•    Develop a strategy for and then execute a plan to recruit key contributors to our platform;
•    With Communications Director, establish communication strategies (on and offline) to engage our members;
•    Builds, manages and coordinates the efforts of a volunteer ‘community’ team;
•    Develops policies to guide positive growth and creativity in the community;
•    Advocates for users when policies break down;
•    Brainstorm initiatives to inspire, encourage and teach users at all levels to become stronger participants; and
•    Performs any other organizational related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications

•    Bachelor's degree preferably in journalism, computer science, communications, public policy or related field strongly desired; advanced degree(s) in a related field a plus. Equivalent experience may substitute for education.

•    Minimum of three to five years of content management, writing, editing, or comparable experience, including prior experience with the development of website content. Preference will be given to candidates with greater experience and knowledge in writing and editing for websites.

•    Practitioner of Web 2.0 tools

•    Two years of experience managing and growing online communities.

•    Excellent project management skills, and demonstrated ability to achieve results.

•    Experience with CSS, HTML, and search engine optimization preferred. Experience with web design, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, JavaScript, Adobe Flash, and video editing are a plus.

•    Superior editing and writing abilities, with an emphasis on Web communications; familiarity with fast-changing Web technology and multimedia communication strategies.

•    Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, including editing and formatting skills, and a proven ability to train and coach colleagues in the areas of communications, writing, editing, and the formatting of materials and resources.

•    Ability to work creatively in a virtual, team-oriented environment; demonstrated skills in building trusted relationships among staff and partners, and demonstrated skills in coordinating the work of teams of colleagues and external partners.

•    Excellent skills in using Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint, with strong skills in word processing.

•    Interest in or desire to learn Hope Street Group's policy areas.

•    Candidates must be comfortable with evolving job duties, be able to take initiative and pursue program goals with minimal supervision, and must have demonstrated experience at managing multiple assignments effectively.

Work Environment
Hope Street Group is a virtual organization. We conduct staff and volunteer business from locations across the United States and expect applicants to maintain their own workspaces and report to regular staff conference calls. Preferred location is in the Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, or D.C. metro area, however other locations will be considered.
