Made possible with funding to the ACT Foundation from Walmart, Hope Street Group launched and will manage the National Retail Challenge to support the use of competency-based career pathways.

In today’s jobs marketplace, poor signaling between employers, training providers and job candidates has led to a skills mismatch, resulting in unfilled jobs and high turnover rates.

We need to re-engineer the workforce system so:

  • Employers have the tools to identify what competencies are needed
  • Training providers know what competencies to teach
  • Individuals can clearly signal their competencies to employers to successfully fill the jobs of today and tomorrow

  • Easter Seals-Goodwill Northern Rocky Mountain
  • Innovate+Educate
  • Youth Job Center

16 MILLION PEOPLE WORK IN RETAIL.

Retail is crucial to our economy–and so are the 16 million who work in the sector. How can we make sure these people have satisfying, rewarding careers? As a part of our larger Sync Our Signals (SOS) initiative, Hope Street Group began managing the Retail Community of Practice, funded by Walmart and Walmart Foundation’s $100 million Opportunity Initiative, in 2015. Walmart and Walmart Foundation have funded leading workforce organizations and retail experts; with Hope Street Group’s leadership, these grantees and partner employers are working to improve the lives of the millions working in retail by: 1) making sure that employers know what skills they should look for in job candidates and 2) helping individuals get these skills for the jobs–and promotions–they want. COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

ACCORDING TO THE CENSUS BUREAU’S 2012 CURRENT POPULATION SURVEY, NEARLY 50 PERCENT OF WORKERS IN RETAIL TRADES OVER AGE 25 HAVE A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR LESS.

As Goodwill Industries International‘s CEO Jim Gibbons noted in our Network Member Interview, “Though equally represented in the retail sector, women and minorities are under-represented in higher-wage retail positions. In order to move into middle skill jobs within the retail industry, most of these current retail workers, as well as new entrants, need skills and competencies that are acquired with training and education beyond high school but less than a four-year degree.” Goodwill is providing training and career pathways to advance 1,500 individuals from entry-level to middle-skills jobs in retail, logistics, and customer service.
