HOPE STREET GROUP EVENT

Education

For the past four years, Hope Street Group has been a leader in promoting systemic reform of the most significant driver of economic opportunity: education.

Join the discussion in the Policy 2.0 education reform community.

We believe that discussing the need to improve education in the context of economic opportunity will reframe what has traditionally been a polarized debate and will engage previously disengaged organizations and individuals. Our policy platform holds that targets, talent, tools, responsibility, and research are the most important factors for transforming the education system, and the President’s role in these five inter-linked areas includes working closely with Congress, the Department of Education, and the National Governors Association (NGA) to invest in education and foster innovation by funding R&D and pilots, highlighting success, and providing incentives for bold reforms.

The national conversation about public education reform is full of great ideas, and with unprecedented federal spending levels, more money is flowing into the system.  But great ideas and financing are not enough.  We need people – those most connected to education policy and practice, and the broader constituency of the passionate – to do the hard work of developing, sharing, and implementing best practices.

Building the Opportunity Economy: An American Dream Agenda for the Next President

On April 13-14, 2008, Hope Street Group convened 40 business, civic, and political leaders to develop an economic "opportunity agenda" for the next president of the United States. Faced with a climate of increasing anxiety and pessimism about the future of economic opportunity in America, these leaders, who represent a wide variety of political views and diverse constituencies, discussed the most pressing issues needing reform in the areas of health care, education, savings, and the competitiveness of small businesses. What resulted was the following pro-opportunity agenda that the participants agreed should serve as a policy blueprint for the next President.

POLICY PAPER: Closing our Educational Achievement Gaps: Fostering Innovation in K-12 Education

America's education system is losing ground internationally.  In 2006, American 15-year olds ranked 25th out of 30 industrialized countries in math and 21st in science.  Meanwhile, taxpayers pay an estimated $1 billion annually to cover remedial college courses simply because a high school diploma no longer guarantees students are prepared for college.

POLICY PAPER: Investing in America's Future: Harvesting the Returns of Quality Preschool

Investing in quality preschool generates enormous economic and social benefits for the country. Children who attend such programs do better in school and throughout their lives. They are more likely to graduate from high school, and they will earn more money. They are also less likely to commit crimes or become pregnant as teenagers. So why isn't quality preschool available to all 3 and 4-year old children in America?

This report, published on the Since Sliced Bread website, finds that contest participants share many common concerns, and want solutions that will empower and engage individuals, families, and communities. They also want a government that is more innovative, productive, and responsive to the aspirations of ordinary people.

American Dreamers: 'Since Sliced Bread' and the Opportunity Economy

Since Sliced Bread was an online contest sponsored by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) that solicited ideas from ordinary Americans on how to strengthen the economy and improve the lives of working men and women and their families. This essay looks at a sampling of the over 22,000 ideas submitted to the contest through the lens of Opportunity Economics. Hope Street Group argues that the American Dream, while alive and well in the hopes and aspirations of many Americans, is in need of retooling for the 21st Century.

POLICY PAPER: Building the Opportunity Economy

The Hope Street Group proposes that American economic politics and policies should focus on one goal above all others: creating equality of opportunity in a high-growth economy.
